Profs and Pints DC presents: “Preventing Election Violence,” on the recent history of election-related terrorism and the potential for violence before, during, and after the midterms, with Jacob Ware, adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and scholar of domestic and international terrorism.
The United States has been plagued by election violence over the past several years, with recent incidents including the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and the attempted 2024 assassination of Donald Trump during an open-air campaign rally.
But the historical record indicates that such election violence is not an aberration. American elections have been undermined by terrorism and political violence since the nation’s founding. We should therefore not be surprised if violence again mars the upcoming 2026 midterms.
